Simple Sunday

Doctrine and Covenants 88:119

Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;

A creative fit!

My niece came to spend the night with us this weekend. She is from California and a freshman at a local university. I love that I get to spend more time with her while she is in school. She went with me to a fabric store and she got hooked. She asked me to help her make this table runner. It really turned out so cute. I was surprised at how quickly it came together. Really not hard at all. Jessica is proud to say, she did the flowers! By "do the flowers" she means she cut them out. Well I must say she did a fine job. To tell you the truth I don't mind. I have not laughed so hard in such a long time. She is such a blast to be around. So this little table topper, which is a gift for her friend, is the end result of a fun sleepover with my niece.

From Trash To Treasure

I found this table at a garage sale for $10. What a deal. It is in excellent condition, just painted an unattractive minty green on top. I love the idea of the drop leaf farm house table. I think that having an extra table for game nights or a kids table when we have a lot of company over or for what I plan to use most often, a entry table. So check back to see just what I end up doing with this cute table. A hint?? I paint everything, my husband HATES it. He is color blind so he does not see the problem with the way they are. If I were to leave our furniture the way they come we would have a mahogany bookshelf, a pine side table, a cherry hope chest and a bright yellow bench. All of which is now painted black and looks quite lovely next to each other. So lets just see how I make this item fit with the rest!

Fall? Already?

To me football always means fall is coming and fast!
I am not sure I am ready for this.
Time just marches on!
So my boy, Chad is the center. For those of you who are
not football people, the center is the player that sets the plays
in motion. Well kinda, he passes the ball through his
legs to the quarterback. Chad says some QB's
are much less "touchy" then other. He hates this one
back up QB because in Chad's words "he touches my stuff
way too much". Not sure what to say to that.
Ok, here is the thing. I can never get a good picture of Chad
playing. He is in line with the offense, hidden behind
all the big boys. But in front of the QB. Well and as soon as
the ball moves the other team jumps at the QB, and inevitably
Chad because he is in front of the QB. So Chad has to
snap the ball then instantly block for the QB. He has bruises all over
his right forearm because he has to block with his left hand
and his right forearm. So here is the best picture so far this
year, see his right arm, with the pad? That's my son!!
Now all this is lovely..but when my husband,
who coaches, yells "WHO LOVES FOOTBALL?"
Chad is the loudest to respond..
"I DO!"
What better way to spend a Saturday morning really?

Zelma Wertner

My Grandma is the tiny girl with the giant bow. She was the best Grandmother. Grandma Boo Boo was my father's mom. He was an only child, and his father died when he was a young man, 15 years old. My dad was a bit rowdy. I have a profound respect for the way my Grandmother raised my father. My grandma was the youngest of a large family. She nursed each sibling in their old age. We all saw this. We all learned from this. She was raised on a farm in Pennsylvania, where she learned how to work and cook.

I learned to cook old fashioned things from her. Well more from her recipes then by her side. She lived in Arizona and we lived in California. She made jam, the hard kind. You know it takes all day and tasted like a slice of heaven. She made the best fudge. You know good fudge is not hard to make..its just a matter of having the right ingredients.

And man on man could she spoil her 5 grand kids rotten! When we moved to CA she took my brothers dog..and fattened him right up. The when we would come to visit she would fatten us up too. Whatever we wanted we had. Spoiled rotten.

My grandma was stubborn, I don't want to imply she was perfect. Lets be honest I heard more profanity from her then from most sailors. She scared off the bullies in the neighborhood, protected the innocent and at one time she ate so many cherries from the tree that she made herself sick, only to go on to eat more with all the new room.

You know my grandma never took us to church or really even talked about God or Jesus Christ. But I can honestly say she taught me the meaning of Christ like service. How many people would nurse all their siblings through the later difficult years. Well and my dad was pretty neat and I think he learned his generosity of Spirit from his mother.

My daughters name is Morgan Zelma, named after her Great Grandmother. When people make fun of her very unusual and old fashioned middle name I tell her to tell them with pride she was named after a strong women; who I am sure is watching down from above just thrilled with her namesake. I only wish she were here to teach Morgan how to be a strong women.

Baby Shower Presents

My friend and neighbor Melody is expecting her first baby. Well she and her husband! They are so excited, and today her family gave her a baby shower. I wanted to make her a cute baby blanket, and I did. Only it is tiny. So being the clever girl I am acted like I inteded to make a tiny baby blanket. I said it's for over her car seat. Everyone thought sounded good, either that or they were too kind to tell the truth! So it is made out of that "minky" fabric on one side and cotton on the other. The flower is made out of cotton, and I pinked the edges so that it will fray all cute in the wash. I guess its ok, but I HATE working with "minky". I am going to stick to cotton and flannel from now on. Except for that my other neighbor is expecting and she requested a blanket just like this one only for a boy. Her exact words were "like this only blue with a monkey or something"; hhmmm a monkey!!

Breaking Dawn

Ok, I know I am not the only on to have waited anxiously for the release of this book. I was even planning to attend a midnight party, and get my copy! Chad and Charlie had a campout for scouts and I thought it might be a little wrong of me to bring Morgan out 'til midnight...so my neighbor Dawn also wanted her copy last night, her and her husband, Todd went out for the book! And because they are nice neighbors they brought me one back!!! I only managed to stay up until 1am. So I am on page 498 and for the most part this book just pisses me off. I really hope it gets better because as of now it just drives me crazy. Anyone else feel that way?
